In this episode, Randy Newberg and the Fresh Tracks crew join the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for a hands-on habitat project, removing encroaching conifer trees from an aspen stand on one of RMEF's conservation properties.
While conifers are a natural part of western forests, they can slowly overtake healthy aspen stands if left unchecked. As the conifers grow taller, they outcompete aspens for sunlight, water, and nutrients, eventually causing these valuable habitats to disappear.
Healthy aspen stands are some of the most productive ecosystems in the West. They provide nutritious forage, security cover, and incredible biodiversity, making them some of the best habitat elk can find. By removing invading conifers, volunteers help ensure these aspen communities remain healthy for elk, deer, countless other wildlife species, and future generations of hunters.
